Newfoundland. Victoria Pattern Specimen 10 Cents 1865, London mint, NF-12, SP64+ PCGS. Plain Edge - Coin Alignment. Fully reflective in the fields with heavy die polish lines (as made) that help to create the prooflike affect. Deeply toned in iridescent shades, and clearly carefully handled for ages, with the obverse displaying yellow and golden hues that concentrate in the centers and a thin ring of maroon and green-blue at the edges. The same colors, only blended throughout, comprise the reverse surfaces as well. A fascinating pattern piece for this first-year of Newfoundland coinage with the adopted design used for the obverse and a slightly modified reverse. Most notable on the reverse are the arches that, while showing the same dimensions as the issued coinage, are outlined to sharpen the appearance. The peripheral circles, also slightly modified from the circulating design, are depressed in the centers with doughnut-shaped inner rings. Extremely rare as a type with survivors likely totaling less that 10. The finest of the two examples certified by PCGS and the first example we have offered. From The Prager Collection of Canadian Specimen Coins
