Newfoundland. Victoria bronze Trial Specimen 20 Cents 1865, London mint, NF-23, SP64 Brown PCGS. Plain Edge - Medallic Die Alignment. A fascinating anomaly in Canadian numismatics, made from the same dies as were used to produce the very rare specimen 1865 Newfoundland 20 cents, but coined in bronze instead of the standard silver. The dies, fairly distinguishable when closely inspected, can be identified by inspection of the "T"s on both side - on the obverse the T in VICTORIA is missing its right base and on the reverse an unusual spike protrudes from the T's right base. Likely produced for a high-ranking mint employee, this piece was obviously held in high regard since its conception. Today, most appealing toning covers both sides with green-blue, maroon and orange iridescent shades profoundly benefiting the eye-appeal. The fields, mildly reflective, sit in pleasing contrast to the devices, and create a mild cameo affect. Closer, magnified inspection yields numerous as-made die polish lines in the fields and essentially no other post-strike issues (could the die polish lines be the reason for the seemingly conservative grade assigned by PCGS?). A small lint mark, near the ":" after REG should be helpful in forever identifying this specimen. Truthfully, a museum-worthy item in all regards, and with its illustrious pedigree, a piece that we are particularly pleased to be able to offer to a new generation of collectors. Ex: William B.
