China
Empire Long Whisker silver Pattern Dollar Year 3 (1911), central mint at Tientsin, L&M-28, Kann-223, KM-Pn304, MS61 NGC. The central areas are bright, and lustrous, with the peripheries exhibiting a smoky russet patina from being in classic "Wayte Raymond" pages since being acquired (with all of the other Chinese coins from this consignment) by the consignor's father in China in the mid-to-late 1930's. A few minuscule contact marks are noted, but overall, the condition is exceptional for a coin of this numerical grade. The Robert Raymond Ruff CollectionDuring the 1930's, a U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class was assigned to a six-month tour of duty on a warship in South Asia. Within weeks, Robert Raymond Ruff found himself patrolling the often dangerous waters of the Yangtze River. The assignment including protecting the lives and properties of Americans living in China. Yet it also afforded him the opportunity to fulfill a life long fascination with coins. At every port he found himself negotiating, with the limited language skills he had managed to acquire, the purchase of Chinese empire silver dollars, as well as regional dollars from several provinces, including Anhwei, Chihli, Hunan, Hupeh, Kiangnan, Kwangtung, Szechuan, and Yunnan. From The Robert Raymond Ruff Collection
