Szechuan. Brass 20 Cent (1 Mace and 4.4 Candareens) Pattern ND (1898), KM-Pn11, MS64 NGC. Type of KM236 and L&M-349. Superbly struck, with near-full mint-red brilliance and surfaces free of significant flaws. Of the few examples we have seen of this rare pattern issue, this is, by far, the nicest example. We have handled only one piece in a previous auction, an AU example sold for $16,100 in our April 2011, Chicago CICF sale. These brass patterns, struck in denominations of 20 Cents, 50 Cents, and 1 Dollar, were supposedly engraved by Charles E. Barber, famed Philadelphia mint engraver, and struck by Ferracute as trials for the Chengtu mint. This piece, and the two following pieces, exhibit the type of strike that one would expect from a Specimen, or trial, strike produced in the U.S. The strike is superb on all three coins, and the engraving flawless, unlike some pieces we have seen offered as the Szechuan patterns, which exhibited crude lettering and flawed strikes. A rare opportunity to obtain three incredibly rare patterns in Choice condition.
