Philip IV cob 8 Reales 1628 NR-P, Nuevo Reino mint, KM3.3, Restrepo-M44, VF, 22.3 grams. Despite the reduced weight, the surfaces are pleasant and only show truly minimal corrosion. Amazingly, the reduced size planchet allows most of the important details to be present: the NR mintmark and assayer Pinto's initial P to the left of the shield, the denomination to its right, and the all-important date (16)28 below the right lion on the reverse lower right quadrant. Very few attributable 8 Reales from the early periods of the Santa Fe (de Nuevo Reino) and Cartagena mint survive. This is a truly rare opportunity for the collector of this rare and challenging series.Ex: Von Schuckmann Collection (Renaissance Auctions 12/2001, lot 3108).
