Philip IV cob 8 Reales 1652 NR-PoRAS, Nuevo Reino mint, KM7.1, Restrepo-M46.10, Very Fine. 25.07 grams. A sea salvage piece showing minor corrosion but well struck on a very broad flan (hence perhaps the edge split at 2 o'clock) and very attractive. Probably the finest known of this rare date/assayer combination (note that Calbeto did not list the date altogether) with the assayer initials spelled as PoRAS (the PoRMS variety also exists), the present specimen is the plate coin in both Restrepo and Lasser-Restrepo. When the present coin was offered as part of the Lasser collection (see below), it was described as "Probably (recovered) from the Gilt Dragon": such is indeed the case, as proven by numismatic scholar Herman Blanton' article published in NI Bulletin's issue of 7-8/2008, where a white metal replica of this same coin is illustrated and described as part of a thirteen-piece collection of replicas produced by the Perth Mint, marketed as The Foundation Stones of Australian Coinage.Ex Lasser collection (Ponterio 1/2005, lot 769).
Estimate: 4000-6000 USD
