Philip V cob 2 Reales (1722)-NR, Nuevo Reino mint, KM19, Restrepo-M72.4 (same dies), Choice F, 6.8 grams. This and the following lot represent fascinating study pieces since they demonstrate the evolution of the dies used to strike this fascinating series. the present piece shares the same pair of dies as the 1722 piece illustrated in Restrepo, with two differences: the "o" between the "NR" mintmark has not been added yet (a fact already noticed when this same piece was offered as part of the Lasser collection), and, more importantly, the assayer initials flanking the pillars are absent! This anomaly must have been corrected very quickly and the corrected die (see next lot) put into use. An attractive full weight specimen of a rare "mint error" with a nice pedigree to boot. Ex: Lasser collection (Ponterio 1/2005, lot 787). The Calico plate coin.
Estimate: 1000-1500 USD
