Colombia
Republic 1/4 Real 1832 P-RU, Popayan mint, KM85.3, Restrepo-147.4, MS63 NGC. A Choice Uncirculated specimen of this very scarce type, with fully original surfaces and attractive grey toning. This is clearly the overdate 2/7 variety with the first two digits also overpunched (interestingly, no specimens dated 1827 are presently known, but this overdate would indicate that a die with that date was completed). While not as rare as the 1830 or 1831, this date remains very elusive, and this is the best specimen by far seen by the cataloguer. The VF ex-Dana Roberts specimen of this same variety sold for $4,250 (Heritage Auctions, 4/2011, lot 25495) so our estimate might prove very conservative. A little jewel of Colombian numismatics!
Estimate: 3000-5000 USD
