Richard III (1483-85) gold Angel ND, London mint, Type D, Boar's Head 2 mm, S-2151, North-1676, Good VF. Despite light tooling marks in the fields and some striking weakness to the dragon translating to the corresponding portion of the ship, this is a very rare issue and highly desirable. The details of the angel and the dragon's head are well struck up as are the legends. Tiny deposits are to be found throughout the recesses and there is a small test cut on the obverse rim at 10 o'clock. The last King of England from the Plantagenet dynasty, Richard III reigned for two short years after usurping power from his nephew, Edward V. His death in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth Field brought to power the Tudor dynasty which would rule England until 1603. Richard's recent exhumation in Leicestershire has brought about a renewed interest in his reign and the legends surrounding the fate of his nephews after their disappearance from the Tower of London.

Estimate: 8000-10000 USD
