Charles I Pontefract Siege Shilling 1648, S-3148, XF40 NGC. A spectacular example of this lozenge-shaped issue cut from the silver plate of Royalist supporters. The impression is deep and the devices and legends bear very light circulation wear. Most remarkable, in this cataloger's opinion, are the remaining details on the castle, the engraving of the stones giving one a clear impression of just how hastily these crude emergency issues were produced. The tone is a lovely, original gray and the surfaces exhibit few marks. This lot and the following are an extraordinary pair from the Siege of Pontefract and certain to elicit highly competitive bidding as their rarity is much-enhanced by their phenomenal state of preservation.
