Cromwell gold Broad or 20 Shillings 1656, KM-Pn25, Fr-273, S-3225, WR-39 (R2), AU58 PCGS. A numismatic classic issued under the Protectorate, designed by Thomas Simon and machine struck using the presses of Frenchman, Pierre Blondeau. While considered a pattern by many, no contemporary information substantiates this classification and given the evidence of circulation seen on many examples, including the present coin, it is just as safe to conclude these were meant for commerce. While circulation clearly remained brief on the present piece, Cromwell's cheek and hair curls do show evidence of soft friction with handling in the open areas remaining unobtrusive, yet recognizable. The fields however retain much of their flashy reflectivity and the legends even more so, with an impressive shimmering gleam that effortlessly reflects the light. The overall originality is perhaps most impressive, as charming orange-red tone serves to highlight many of the devices and helps to accentuate this coin's strongest features. All in all, a wonderful example of this important historical issue and sure to be a prideful addition to the next cabinet it graces.

Estimate: 25000-30000 USD
