William & Mary Halfcrown 1689, KM472.1, S-3434, MS62 PCGS. First bust - first shield type. A stunning example of this popular William and Mary issue, and while not quite the technical equivalent of the Terner (MS64 PCGS) example, a coin that certainly holds many comparisons. Perhaps most notable is the strike, with the hair detail showing similar pinpoint execution to the Terner coin, but the lower left quadrant of the shield on the reverse clearly besting Terner's. The tone also suggests long-time placement in a refined cabinet with an alluring palette of gold, purple and blue tone that caresses the obverse and reverse, imparting a most desirable and seldom-rivaled appeal. A couple blended ticks and light haymarks are noted, but overall, one is left to question why the grade was limited to MS62. A truly splendid halfcrown!
