George II Crown 1741, KM575.2, S-3687, ESC-123, MS65 NGC. Roses reverse - "D. Quarto" edge type. A sensational survivor, a candidate for the finest known, and the epitome of originality with a full palette of tone that accents the central motifs in golden hues and deepens to a splendid gray at the edges. More intricate inspection of this Gem confirms everything suggested by the grade with crisp detailing from center to edge and hardly a mark to be found. The centers, largely dove-gray colored at first inspection, are actually composed of a mixture of multicolored iridescent patina that reveals itself nicely when rotated beneath a light. Minuscule "haymark" flecks, typical on coinage of this era, are of little concern. Of the 16 examples deemed Mint State by NGC and PCGS, this example is the only piece to reach the Gem (MS65 or finer) plateau - a significant milestone and as such, reason for significant collector attention. Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $850 in VF, $2775 in EF.

Estimate: 15000-20000 USD
