George III gold Pattern Proof Third Guinea 1776, KM-Pn55, S-unlisted, WR-137 (R3 - "extremely rare"), PR63 PCGS. By Richard Yeo. Obv: Laureate bust of George III facing right. Rev: Lion atop crown. Edge: Plain. Last offered in our January 2012 auction and wonderfully cataloged at that time as, "seldom seen in choice state; in fact, most noted by this cataloger over the years were on planchets having flaws, not well centered, nor well struck. This coin is a happy exception to the rule! PR63 PCGS: an unusually Choice brilliant Proof with light hairlines (hence the 63 grade), well-centered and struck on a superior flan with very sharp details. Tin-silver streak on lion's crown, & buckled obverse die to right of king's face (normal on this). One of the finest known of this classic pattern, featuring the "magical" 1776 date."
Estimate: 4500-5500 USD
