George III gold Proof Half Guinea 1787, KM608, S-3735, WR-130, PR64 Cameo NGC. Mintage: 168. A mesmerizing rarity with heavy die polish in the fields (as made) that creates a distinctly reflective, yet streaky appearance that is undeniably appealing. Fiery copper-orange patination further adds to look, with blushes of tone that dance around the legends and ideally frame the pleasingly cameoed centers. Sporadic handling, albeit present, is less than is typical of the issue, and remains out of focal significance. Just a tiny step down from the PR65 Cameo that we sold in our September 2011 Long Beach sale for $13,800, and as such, likely to receive a premium to the Spink £4500 (approximately $7500) catalog value. Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $450 in VF, $650 in EF, $1300 in UNC.
