Victoria Royal Mint Proof 5 Cents 1879, Type of KM5, PR63 NGC. Unlisted in KM, or Pridmore, as a Royal mint Proof. Brilliant white, with fully mirrored fields and some cameo contrast. The strike is extremely sharp and a few minor marks are noted on close examination. The Royal Mint indicates that most 19th Century off-year or VIP proof coins were struck for inclusion for Mint displays at international exhibitions. It is very possible that this piece was struck for such an event. This 5 Cent proof of 1879 originated in the Goodman Collection sold in California in 1995, though it bore a considerable coat of lacquer at the time and was not recognizable as a proof by the cataloguers until the lacquer was removed. The only 1879 5 Cent proof we have seen, and, possibly, the only example extant. A rare opportunity to acquire such an important piece from such a popular series. From The William Barrett Collection
