Charles I of England Ormonde Crown ND (1643-44), KM63 variety, S-6544, XF40, NGC. With crowned C-R and ornamental S. Handsome, with steel-gray patination and impressively bold details, which is quite uncommon since these emergency coins are typically encountered weak because of their use during wartime. Overall, a pleasing specimen with several ancient abrasions that really only add to the character of this scarce issue. An historically important piece, this was the largest denomination of the Great Rebellion, issued in the name of Charles I of England by the Lords Justice at Dublin, and long since collected as "Ormonde money" in recognition of the Earl of Ormonde, who was appointed Lieutenant of Ireland in 1643.
