Papal States. Sixtus V gold Doppia ND (1585-90), Bologna mint, Fr-352, Berman-1356, Muntoni-91 var. I, AU53 NGC. A very rare issue, the reverse bearing the arms of Bologna and the Caetani and the obverse the arms of the Peretti from whom Sixtus was descended. The strike has been well-executed, as expected on a gold coin of this size, although there is an unfortunate planchet flaw which has left a small hole (almost crescent shaped) through the center of the coin. The variety here is defined by the flower below the reverse cross in place of the star which is normally seen on this type.
