Charles III gold 4 Escudos 1778 LM-MJ, Lima mint, KM81, AU55 NGC. An impressive example of this rare coin, very close to Mint State and attractive toning over the surfaces. Bust Charles III 4 Escudos of Lima are very rare, although this is not generally acknowledged: the famed Sellschopp collection had but one example (SBC 9/1988, lot 318, an XF 1777), as did Eliasberg (ANR 4/2005, lot 3483: amazingly, a completely comparable 1778 also graded AU55!), while Burzio could only confirm 3 examples in his Diccionario (the 1776 Vidal Quadras specimen, a 1780 sold by Hans Schulman in 1944 and the 1782 ex-Newcomer coin). Offerings of this type are few and far between with perhaps only four additional specimens offered since the aforementioned Eliasberg sale. The present coin is undoubtedly among the finest known and represents a rare opportunity for the collector of this elusive series.
