Ferdinand VII Manila 1828 Type I countermark over Iturbide 8 Reales 182(x) Mo-JM, Manila mint, KM20, VF20 NGC. An extremely rare host coin for this countermark, with few specimens known. Iturbide's profile is clear under the MANILA 1828 stamp (and sufficiently so to identify the host coin as KM310), while the stamping of the Spanish coat of arms (as part of the countermark) on the reverse is mostly complete. Note that the three subtypes for this countermark listed in the SCWC are essentially successive die-states of a countermarking die that worn out in the process of its application. Only 72,820 8 Reales coins were countermarked with this die (as compared to a total of 739,803 pesos with the round "F.7" countermark, including a few coins of the minor denominations). From The Collection of Dr. Roger R. McFadden

Estimate: 1500-2500 USD
