Ferdinand VII Manila 1828 Type I countermark over Peru 8 Reales 1827 LM-JM, Manila mint, KM24, VF Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC. A presentable example of this very scarce countermarked issue, with the HABILITADO POR EL REY N. S. D. FERN. VII legend around the Spanish coat of arms on the reverse. The operation to apply this bifacial countermark which intended to obliterate the independentist legends of the Republican Latin American coins and started on October 1828 was a complete failure due to the faulty presses of the Manila mint. Another similar countermark without the legend on the reverse soon replaced it before the end of that year. Eventually, the operation was terminated altogether in 1830 (few counterstamps bearing that date are known, and a unique 1829 counterstamp also exists). When the countermarking operations resumed in October 1832, the applied mark was a smallish 9-10 mm circular mark applied on only one side of the undercoin. Surviving coins of these 1828-1830 countermarking operations usually show more of the undertype legends than the Spanish authorities would have wished for! From The Collection of Dr. Roger R. McFadden

Estimate: 1000-1500 USD
