Alexander III Coronation Rouble 1883-ЛIII, St. Petersburg mint, Bitkin-217, KM-Y43, UNC with prooflike fields. Obv. Bust of Alexander III right with date below, Rev. Crown, scepter, and orb on pillow, in wreath, with value above. Minor greenish stain at edge of reverse between 9 and 12 o'clock. Light hairlines. Ex: John J. Pittman Collection, Lot 4465, with auction lot tag. According to David Akers, in the Pittman catalog, "Purchased as a Proof by JJP from Barney Bluestone. Lacquered at one time, the lacquer now removed. Very brilliant mirror fields that have many light hairlines. Light golden toning with just the slightest trace of iridescent colors. Purchased by JJP from Barney Bluestone's 97th sale, June 1947, Lot 1912, for $3.20." What an amazing provenance. Most know John Pittman and his attendance at coin shows and work with the ANA. Many do not know of Barney Bluestone, one of the great early auctioneers of U.S. numismatics from Syracuse, New York. Bluestone auctioned some of the great collections sold in the 1920's, 1930's, and 1940's.
