Alexander III gold 5 Roubles 1889 AГ-AГ, St. Petersburg mint, Bitkin-34 (this is the scarcer variety with the mintmaster's initials, AГ, on the truncation of the bust), Fr-169, MS65 PCGS. Obv. Bust right. Rev. Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle with date and value. A superb example of this much scarcer type. Sharply struck, with soft orange patina over fully lustrous surfaces with no flaws worthy of mention. Before this Gem example appeared, we had seen only one other of this type in MS65, an NGC MS65 in our May 29, 2008 auction, Lot 52730, sold for $17,250. That remains the only MS65 certified by NGC, with no coins finer. Extremely rare in this condition.
Estimate: 10000-12500 USD
