Uruguay
Republic Peso 1895, Buenos Aires mint, KM17a, MS65 NGC. Gem Brilliant Uncirculated with a small area of darker patination on the denomination side, but nevertheless exceptionally choice for this one-year type. The latter designation might raise a few eyebrows since the SCWC lumps the 1893 and 1895 dates as the same type, so a small explanation is handy: Uruguay commissioned the Paris mint for the 1877-78 issues (hence the "A" mintmark on those, and since the dies are the same, there is no justification whatsoever for differentiating those two dates as different types), the Santiago Mint for the 1893 issues (though privateer Juan Barriga) and the Buenos Aires mint (through privateer Alejandro Basso). Thus, those three issues should be classified as three different types. From The Collection of Dr. Roger R. McFadden
