MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Do RL. Durango Mint. NGC AU-53.
HOH-D2/M3 (Eagle side plated); KM-376.1; DP-Do01. Medium Libertad and Defiant Snake. Variety with rays pointing directly toward the "R" of "8R" and superscript "o" of "Do", dot precedes "8R". Lower left wing tip is close to the second "A" of "MEXICANA" and upper joint of right wing is below "A" of "REPUBLICA". This beautifully preserved and very attractive example boasts a strong strike, although a slight weakness is noticed in the upper left portion of the Phrygian cap. Plenty of remaining luster in the protected areas. The surfaces are smooth with light wear, primarily confined to the high points and exposed areas. This coin features a lovely rich gray patina with a slightly iridescent sheen amongst the devices. Pleasing to the eye, a handsome example.

Hubbard and O'Harrow placed the Defiant snake into two groups. The first group is coupled with Medium Libertad which does not appear to be combined with other cap variants and should be considered RARE. The second group is coupled with the Small Libertad and appears with more frequency.
