MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Do RL. Durango Mint. NGC EF Details--Obverse Cleaned.
HOH-D5/S1: KM-376.2; DP-Do01. Small Libertad-Staggered ray and Defiant Snake. Variety with a large gap between rays and legend. The superscript "s" of Granos is doubled and positioned above the "G". A prominent left ray is close to the "8" of "8R". The right wing joint is directly below the "A" of "REPUBLICA" and a die break extends from "U" to eagle's crown feathers. This example exhibits well struck devices with nearly complete "Libertad", even wear and much remaining luster in the protected areas. The surfaces are relatively smooth displaying attractive delicate tone with a slight iridescence. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning primarily confined to the open area between the legend and the rays which is now slightly subdued by the light patination. A presentable example of the type with a pleasing appearance.

According to Hubbard and O'Harrow, this is the only Eagle side die in this group where the joint of the right wing is directly below the "A" of "REPUBLICA". To view all items from the Richard Elliot Collection click here.
