MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Do RL. Durango Mint. NGC EF Details--Cleaned.
HOH-D11/S2 (Eagle side plated, clashed die) (Early die state of cap side die); KM-376.2; DP-Do01. Small Libertad-Staggered ray and Defiant Snake. Variety with superscript "s" of Granos above end stop of legend. Beginnings of die chip at lower front of "D" of mintmark. This die chip grows dramatically through the life of this die. The plate coin in "Hookneck" shows a large die chip and open bottom of the "D". Snake's body touches leftmost inner acorn, left wing is close to legend with its tip pointing to the final "A" of "MEXICANA". This moderately worn and charming example exhibits a strong central strike with even wear primarily confined to the high points and exposed areas. The cap is full with complete Libertad, although several tips of the primary rays and a few letters on the eagle side are slightly weak with loss of definition in the tops. Close inspection reveals evidence of a light past cleaning, now slightly subdued by light attractive soft gray tone.

The eagle side die shows signs of a die clashing, not mentioned in Hubbard and O'Harrow, and appears to be one of only three dies with Defiant snake to exhibit such a characteristic. Also, of importance the cap side die that clashed with the eagle side does not appear to be recorded in Hubbard and O'Harrow. The most prominent feature being the raised rays between the wings and tail do not seem to match with the corresponding rays near "8R" on the cap side of S2, S4 (even rays) or S6 (even rays). An interesting example deserving of further research from the specialist.
