MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Do RL. Durango Mint. NGC EF-40.
HOH-F8/L15 (both dies late die state); KM-376.6; DP-Do01. Large Libertad-Staggard rays and Folded Snake, small diameter planchet. Variety with both superscript "s" and end stop of legend overlap a primary ray. Ray touches "R" of "8R". Fold of snake is wave-like and shallow, head of snake near acorn. Struck slightly off-center evidenced by prominent denticles on obverse and reverse. This handsome and nicely preserved example boasts a bold even strike. The cap is full with complete "Libertad", rays and bold legends. The surfaces are smooth with moderate signs of handling displaying attractive mottled tan and golden-brown patina amongst the devices. This piece offers much originality with a pleasing appearance.

The present piece appears to be a sub-variety for this die combination (F8/L15). Close inspection reveals evidence of die clashing on both sides. Incuse and in retrograde an "M . A" is noticed between the rays in the upper left quadrant of the cap side. While parts of the cap side legend are noticed around "ANA" of "MEXICANA" of the eagle side. The example plated in Hubbard and O'Harrow does not appear to exhibit these characteristics which would indicate that the present example was struck from later state dies.
