MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Do RL. Durango Mint. NGC EF Details--Obverse Graffiti.

HOH-N1/S5; KM-376.3; DP-Do01. Small Libertad-Staggered ray and Submissive Snake. Variety with cap slightly offset to the right. Superscript "s" of Dineros is over an "o" and very distinct. Superscript "s" of Granos is between "G" and final stop of legend. Top prominent rays slightly tilted left. Head of snake is pointed down and is about even with the acorns at the end of the wreath. This example boasts a strong strike with bold well-defined design features and even wear that is primarily confined to the high points and exposed areas with plenty of remaining luster. The cap is full with complete Libertad, legends and well detailed eagle's breast. There is light shallow graffiti on the cap side in the lower right quadrant and a light scratch extending through the left side of the cap. Despite its shortcomings this is a presentable example of an interesting variety.

It is important to note that crudely engraved initials "JA" are located above the tip of the eagles tail. This feature was unknown to Hubbard and O'Harrow at the time of publishing their 2001 supplement.
