MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Go JM. Guanajuato Mint. NGC AU Details--Tooled.
HOH-GO1/GR1; KM-A376.1; DP-Go01. Variety without superscript "s" next to "G" for Granos. Snake's head pointing to center of the vertical leg of the "R" in "REPUBLICA". This example boasts a bold even strike with well-formed design features including a full cap with nearly complete "Libertad", detailed eagle's breast and full legends. The surfaces display light attractive mottled tone with areas of richer coloration throughout. Close inspection reveals evidence of tooling on both sides in the fields and crevasses. The "0" of "20" has been effaced accounting for the "Details" designation. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example of this heavily sought after type with lots of detail.
It is interesting to note that the issues from this mint appear to have been under more strict control and guidance than the other mints from this period. According to Hubbard and O'Harrow there are fewer known dies from this mint with more consistent production during the manufacturing process.
