MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Go JM. Guanajuato Mint. NGC AU Details--Cleaned.
HOH-GO Not listed/GR3; KM-A376.1; DP-Go01. Variety with rays slightly offset to the right of "0" of "10", superscript "s" of Granos nicks a ray and touches the "G". Head of snake points to inside edge of the vertical leg of "R", bulging die degradation at "UBLICA" of "REPUBLICA". This interesting example boasts a strong strike with well-formed design features including a full cap and detailed eagle's breast. The surfaces are a pleasing light mottled gray patina with hints of iridescence and areas of richer coloration throughout the cap side. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now slightly subdued.

The present coin is of particular interest when it comes to the issues from the Guanajuato mint. Usually when examples from this mint appear both dies are listed in Hubbard and O'Harrow. They do state that due to the consistency of this mints product not all varieties are listed and that the probability of other varieties existing is high. That said seldom do examples appear where only one side can be linked to known documented dies such as the case with the present coin. Unknown to Hubbard, O'Harrow and Elliott when the Supplement was published in 2001.
