MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Go JM. Guanajuato Mint. NGC AU Details--Cleaned.
HOH-GO11/GR11A (plate coin); KM-A376.1; DP-Go01.
HOH numbering appears out of order because both dies were discovered after the original publication of "Hookneck" in 1997. Variety with double punched star. Superscript "s" touches "G" of Granos, and "o" of mintmark touches left inside of "G". Head of snake points to inside vertical leg of "R". This example exhibits a strong strike with and light attractive mottled patina. The cap is full and the legends are complete on both sides with detailed eagle's breast. Evidence of a past cleaning is now slightly subdued. Rare variety of which only two examples were known to Elliot when the Supplement was published in 2001.
It is interesting to note that under high magnification the present piece appears to have evidence of an undercoin, possibly due to being overstruck on another coin or perhaps double struck. Unfortunately, the strike has eliminated most of the identifying features and requires further research and comparison to verify its attribution.
