MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1823-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. NGC EF-40.
HOH-MO3/MR3A; KM-A376.2; DP-Mo01. Flat top "3". Much scarcer than the 1824 issues. Variety with ray pointing directly to star, tip of ray nearly touches top left of "J" of the assayer's initials. Snake's head aligns with the center of "R". Top of eagle's tail feather aligns with last "A" of "MEXICANA". This example displays an attractive light gray tone with richer coloration amongst the devices and plenty of remaining luster that pops out when rotated in the light. The legends are bold and clear, although the centers are a bit weak. Wholesome, with a good look, this piece offers much originality. Elliott considered this variety RARE with only two sales records when the Supplement was published in 2001. To view all items from the Richard Elliot Collection click here.
