MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1823-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU-50.
HOH-MO5/MR5; KM-A376.2; DP-Mo01. Flat top "3". Much scarcer than the 1824 issues. Variety with rays that bracket the "0" of "10". Superscript "s" of Granos is next to the top of "G" and over the end stop of the legend. Head of snake points to vertical leg of "R", top tip of eagle's tail aligns with last "A" of "MEXICANA". Sections of snake are poorly segmented. Nicely preserved and attractive, this handsome example exhibits a good strike with bold legends and a full cap with nearly complete Libertad. The surfaces display light gray coloration with plenty remaining luster amongst the devices and areas of delicate tone on the eagle side. Wholesome with a pleasing appearance.

Portions of the eagle side die, particularly the center of the cactus and eagle's leg, appear to be engraved in higher relief than encountered on other dies from this mint. We were able to locate three other examples of this die pair, all sharing this same characteristic.
