MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1823-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU-55.
HOH-MO6/MR6 (Plate coin); KM-A376.2; DP-Mo01. Flat top "3". Much scarcer than the 1824 issues. Variety with superscript "s" of Dineros high above dot and superscript "s" of Granos is between the "G" and end stop almost touching the ray tip. Head of snake points below the "R", gap between snake's body and eagle's beak, top tip of eagle's tail aligns with the inside of the second leg of the final "A" in the legend. This nicely preserved example displays a light attractive gray tone with much remaining luster in the protected areas and hints of richer coloration throughout. The cap is full with a virtually complete "Libertad", bold legends, and much detail on the eagle's breast. Pleasing to the eye, a nice Almost Uncirculated example of this mint and type. Considered scarce by Elliott with only four recorded sales noted in the 2001 supplement.

This piece exhibits an interesting diagnostic that makes attribution to this die pair simple. A die crack that runs from above the "B" in slightly oblique downward manner terminating in the upper right of the "C". Die degradation is not a unique characteristic to this die, but it is the size and length of this die crack that makes it stand out from other dies from this mint. There appears to be corresponding die deterioration at the top of the cap side die.
