MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1823-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU Details--Harshly Cleaned.
HOH-MO7/MR7; KM-A376.2; DP-Mo01. Flat top "3". Much scarcer than the 1824 issues. Variety with ray almost touching superscript "s" of Granos. Ray points to superscript "s" of Dineros. Head of snake points slightly downward and is even with vertical leg of the "R" of "REPUBLICA". Top portion of eagle's tail is even with the second leg of the "A" of "REPUBLICA". Diagnostic die bulge is prominent behind eagle. This example boasts a strong strike with well-formed design features. The cap is full with complete legends and detailed eagle's breast and cactus. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now slightly subdued. A presentable example of this popular first year issue. Elliott considered this variety rare with only one recorded sale as of the 2001 Supplement.
Much like the previous lot, this pair of dies offers diagnostic characteristics that make attribution a simple task. The bulge on the eagle side has a slight, but distinct curve from the wings to the cactus on the right side.
