MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1823-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. NGC VF-35.
HOH-MO7A/MR7; KM-A376.2; DP-Mo01. Flat top "3". Much scarcer that the 1824 issues. Variety with ray almost touching superscript "s" of Granos. Ray points to superscript "s" of Dineros. Head of snake aligned with vertical leg of "R", wing tip pointing to second leg of first "A" of "MEXICANA". This example boasts a strong strike with even wear and clear features. Moderately worn and displaying a light gray color with richer patination amongst the devices and high points adding to its pleasing appearance. The cap is full with complete legends, though only a portion of "Libertad" is visible. Wholesome and attractive, this piece is pleasing to the eye. Elliott also considered this variety rare with only one recorded sale as of the publication of the Supplement in 2001.

This lot (HO-MO7A/MR7) and the preceding lot (HO-MO7/MR7) are interesting in the fact that they share the cap side die, but have different eagle side dies. Though the cap side dies are the same they differ slightly in their states of preservation. The current piece exhibits a die crack from the edge that goes through the "G" of Granos in an upward oblique manner terminating near the tip of the ray that points to the "0" of "20". While the preceding lot does not have such a crack and would indicate that the eagle side die from the previous lot was in use first. When compared to other examples it becomes apparent that the cap side die was in use longer than other dies and is paired with at least two eagle side dies.
