MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU Details--Cleaned.
HOH-MO11/MR UNLISTED; KM-A376.2; DP-Mo02. Variety where tip of ray touches the top of "4" in the date. Both superscript "s" are set low above the stops. Head of snake alighns with center of the vertical leg of the "R". There is a gap between the eagle's beak and snake above the snake's head. Top tip of eagle's tail aligns with the center of the "A". This example displays a light gray coloration with richer patina amongst the devices and protected areas. The central strike is a bit soft, as is often encountered on these issues, although the legends are bold with good definition. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now slightly subdued and pleasant. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example of this popular type. This variety was unknown when the Supplement to "Hookneck" was published in 2001.
It is interesting to point out that the present piece and the next three lots can all be die linked. This is unusual for this mint in that most die pairs, with few exceptions, are only able to be linked one die. Upon further study and comparison of die degradation the order of dies appears to be MO11/MR UNLISTED, MO11/MR11, MO11/MR11A and then MO11A/MR11A.
