MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Mo JM. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU Details--Cleaned.
HOH-MO14/MR14; KM-A376.2; DP-Mo02. Variety with ray touching the top of "J" (assayer's letter). Superscript "s" of Granos is between ray and "G" with a prominent die chip in field between the long rays at about 2:00. Head of snake points to just below "R" of "REPUBLICA" and a die crack at first leg of "N" of "MEXICANA". This example exhibits a strong strike with a nearly full cap with complete "Libertad" and full legends on both sides. The surfaces display mottled sunset hued patina amongst the devices while the exposed areas are a brighter silver coloration. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning with a couple of shallow pin scratches between a couple of the rays, now slightly subdued. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example of this type and scarcer die pairing. To view all items from the Richard Elliot Collection click
