MEXICO. "Hookneck" 8 Reales, 1824-Do RL. Durango Mint. PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, EF Details.
KM-376.4; HO-N1/L2; DP-Do01. Large Libertad-Even ray and Submissive snake. Variety with cap set low in the die, dot before "8R", rays pointing to and almost touch the "R" of "8R" and "D" of "Do", ray touches "G" of granos, head of snake pointed down and is about even with the acorns at the end of the wreath. This nicely preserved and very attractive example boasts a strong strike with relatively smooth surfaces and rich mottled gray patina. The devices are bold with wear primarily contained to the high points and exposed areas with plenty of remaining luster in amongst the devices. Close inspection of the obverse reveal faint light graffiti between the rays of what appears to be script "63 3 3 day" with an unknown meaning. Despite its shortcomings a handsome and wholesome example of the type that offers good eye appeal with much originality.

It is interesting to note that Clyde Hubbard and David O'Harrow, authors of "Hookneck El Aguila de Perfil", place this snake under the submissive snake category, but make a distinction of calling it "upside down Defiant Snake".

Estimate: $700 - $1000
