ITALY. Calabria. Tarentum. AR Didrachm (Nomos) (7.69 gms), ca. 302-280 B.C. NGC Ch AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.
HGC-1, 816; HN Italy-967. Obverse: Nude rider on horseback to right, holding lance in right hand and shield with two javelins in left; Reverse: Phalanthos, holding small dolphin, astride dolphin to left. An exceptional example. This Didrachm exhibits a bold strike with remarkable clarity and relief. The centering and quality of strike yield a crisply legible magistrate name on the obverse, a seldom-seen feature. The devices are surrounded by bright glowing luster that is moderated only by a subtle tone.
