MACEDON. Kingdom of Macedon. Philip II, 359-336 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (14.40 gms), Amphipolis Mint, ca. 342/1-329/8 B.C. NGC VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. Edge Marks.
HGC-3.1, 865; SNG ANS-510-20. Obverse: Laureate head of Zeus right; Reverse: Youth, holding palm frond, riding horse right; janiform head below raised foreleg. This beautiful Tetradrachm was struck either in the lifetime of Philip II or during the reign of his son and successor, Alexander III "the Great". The well-centered strike delivers a bold depiction of Zeus in lovely style. Deep cabinet toning on the fields gives the piece an elegant look. The noted edge marks are inconsequential. A terrific example of this type from the twilight of the Classical era of ancient Greece.
Estimate: $200 - $300
