ATTICA. Athens. AR Tetradrachm (17.20 gms), ca. 454-404 B.C. NGC MS, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5.
HGC-4, 1597; Kroll-8. Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right; Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent to left; all within incuse square. This impressive Tetradrachm features a full strike on its broad flan, including Athena's complete neck truncation, nose, and half of her helmet's crest on the obverse. The reverse incuse is similarly complete, with the sprig, owl, and ethnic appearing in their entirety. Hardly a trace of circulation can be detected on either side, allowing the razor-sharp detail and brilliant luster to present itself without any impediment. An exceptional example of this famous type. It would be difficult for even a discerning collector to encounter a finer or more attractive specimen.

Estimate: $1000 - $1500
