ATTICA. Athens. AR Tetradrachm (17.17 gms), ca. 454-404 B.C. NGC Ch AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5.
HGC-4, 1597; Kroll-8. Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right; Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent to left; all within incuse square. A rather individual example of the type, this piece displays an off-center obverse strike which leaves open space on the broad fields. Despite this, Athena's head is fully struck and full of wonderful detail. The reverse strike is bold and perfectly centered, giving the owl impressive definition. The surfaces are lightly toned and lustrous, bearing only occasional contact marks. A wholesome beauty that is certain to please discerning collectors.
