LYDIA. Kroisos, 561-546 B.C. AR Siglos (1/2 Stater) (5.29 gms), Sardes Mint, ca. 550-546 B.C. NGC VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5. Marks, Countermark.
Sunrise-11; Berk-23; SNG von Aulock-2877-9. Obverse: Confronted foreparts of lion right and bull left; Reverse: Two incuse square punches of unequal size. This wonderful Lydian issue is well-struck and attractively toned. A small countermark or banker's mark was unobtrusively placed above the lion's head. The noted marks are mostly confined to the peripheries do not detract at all from this lovely example of archaic silver coinage.
