CILICIA. Tarsos. Datames, Satrap of Cilicia, 384-361/0 B.C. AR Stater. NGC EF. Countermark, Test Cut.
SNG BN-291-7; SNG von Aulock-5944 (for countermark). Obverse: Baal seated right, head and torso facing, holding grain ear and grape bunch in right hand and cradling scepter with left arm; all within crenellated wall; Reverse: Ana, nude, standing right, extending right hand and point at Tarkumuwa, standing left. A beautiful Stater struck during the period of Persian rule in Cilicia. Boldly struck on both sides, a neatly placed countermark is seen on the upper left corner of the reverse. The small test cut on the obverse rim detracts little from the coin's eye appeal. A charming example with great metal quality.
Estimate: $400 - $600
