SASSANIAN EMPIRE. Shahpur I, A.D. 240-272. AV Dinar (7.40 gms), Mint I ("Ctesiphon"), ca. A.D. 260-272. NGC AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5.
Sunrise-740; SNS Type IIC/1B; Gobl Type-I/1; Saeedi-AV5. Obverse: Bust of Shahpur I right, wearing diadem and mural crown with korymbos; Reverse: Fire altar flanked by two attendants wearing mural crowns; fravahr to upper left. Struck shortly following Shahpur's unprecedented defeat and capture of the Roman emperor Valerian, this stunning gold Dinar exemplifies the height of the Sassanian Empire's prosperity. The legends and stylized devices can be appreciated in their entirety due to the bold, well-centered strike. With limited evidence of handling, the surfaces retain crisp originality with a soft lustrous finish. Just a touch of tone helps to enrich the golden color and add boldness to the details. An elegant example of the type.
Estimate: $3000 - $5000
