ROMAN REPUBLIC. Mn. Fonteius C.f. AR Denarius, Rome Mint, ca. 85 B.C. NGC AU.
Cr-353/1a; Syd-724. Obverse: Laureate head of Vejovis (or Apollo) right; Roma monogram below chin, thunderbolt below head; Reverse: Infant winged Genius (or Cupid) seat on a goat, standing right; pilei of the Dioscuri above; filleted thyrsus in exergue; all within laurel wreath. A wonderfully original Denarius of the later Roman Republic. Abundant brilliance lingers beneath the amber-gray tone. The strike remains fresh and pleasingly detailed. An excellent representative of the type, far more visually appealing than typically encountered.
Estimate: $200 - $300
