JULIUS CAESAR. AR Denarius (3.97 gms), Military Mint Traveling with Caesar, 49 B.C. NGC AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.
Cr-443/1; CRI-9; Syd-1006; RSC-49. Obverse: Elephant advancing right, trampling upon horned serpent; Reverse: Emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis, and apex. A stunning example of this must-have Imperatorial type. The elephant is struck in unusually lifelike detail and proportions, and Caesar's name displays boldly and confidently in the exergue. The reverse is similarly well-struck, with just a touch of weakness on one peripheral side. Beneath the stormy gray tone, plenty of mint brilliance lingers and gives the piece an elegant look. Wonderfully well-centered, free from any problems, and impressively well-preserved, this piece is certain to attract collectors looking for a high-end representative of this iconic and historically significant type.

Estimate: $1500 - $2500
