JULIUS CAESAR. AR Denarius (3.92 gms), Military Mint Traveling with Caesar, 49 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5. Banker's Mark.
Cr-443/1; CRI-9; Syd-1006; RSC-49. Obverse: Elephant advancing right, trampling upon horned serpent; Reverse: Emblems of the pontificate: simpulum, aspergillum, securis, and apex. A stunning example of the ever-popular Caesar "Elephant" Denarius. Struck in the year that Caesar crossed the Rubicon, this type could not come from a more momentous point in Roman history. This piece features a charming pig-like elephant above Caesar's bold and complete name. The reverse is just as well-struck, and both sides are rather nicely centered for the issue. The fields abound with luster that complements the elegant purple-tinted tone. A crescent-shaped banker's mark on the upper obverse field takes nothing away from the piece, and even adds visual interest as it resembles the moon in the background. An enticing example that will undoubtedly appeal to a wide array of collectors.
Estimate: $1000 - $1500
